Is it weird I've named my new sewing machine Herbie? Maybe, but say hello to sweet spearmint sewing heaven! The lovely people at John Lewis sent me this Limited Edition JL110 sewing machine, it comes in six different colours - red, fuchsia, navy, spearmint, magenta and teal. All really beautiful colours, but I chose spearmint as I know this is a colour that I want my 'future office' to be! It has 14 stitch options, 4-step automatic buttonhole facility, a darning plate - and a free arm for sewing cuffs or trouser legs; it also comes with a soft dust cover (which is white) . You can use it for sewing light to medium weight fabrics, which is perfect for making skirts, wash bags, pillows, aprons etc!
As you can see this £99 sewing machine still offers all the basics (and more) of a £300+ machine. It has 14 stitch options which means you can create all kinds of looks, and projects! My first project is going to be a reversible sleep mask! I have never used a sewing machine before but my mum has been sewing since she was 12 and I've always wanted to be able to make my own clothes and home wares. I loved The Great British Sewing Bee, and was amazed at the things you can create in your own home for much less then it would cost you to purchase. And the ability to fix tears, make baby clothes and more is just fascinating to me. I know that this is primarily a 'beauty blog' but obviously as we get older our obsessions and hobbies change, I have always loved all things crafty and would LOVE to do a DIY series on my blog and on my YouTube channel. I am in NO way a professional (did I mention, not used a sewing machine before) so everything will be for beginners as I am one myself, and if I can do it, so can you! I hope to maybe take a sewing course in the future to get me to maybe an intermediate level, and then advaced just comes with experience and years!
Here is the foot, it also comes with a plastic foot, three replacement needles and three spools for your thread. I am really excited to start sewing this weekend and have my first go at making something, once I have got the hang of it I will be posting a DIY post/video on how to make a sleep mask, you can sew it by hand though, so don't worry if you don't have a sewing machine. If you do want one though, I couldn't recommend the JL110 enough, it's perfect for beginners like myself (I have done a lot of research into the best machines for beginners and light sewers) At only £99 this would be a great investment, gift, birthday present (graduation present?!) so check them out here.
